Description
A hearty open-faced sandwich featuring a saucy and chunky ground beef mixture simmered in a tomato-based sauce with Worcestershire and mustard, served on toasted Texas toast.
Ingredients
1 lb ground beef
1 small onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup tomato sauce
1/2 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
4 slices Texas toast bread
2 tablespoons butter
Instructions
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef until browned, breaking it up with a spoon.
Add diced onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic; cook until vegetables soften, about 5 minutes.
Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, brown sugar, salt, and black pepper.
Reduce heat to low and simmer the mixture, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes until thickened and saucy.
Meanwhile, butter one side of each Texas toast slice.
Toast the bread, buttered side down, in a separate skillet or under the broiler until golden brown and crispy.
Pile the hot sloppy joe mixture thickly on the toasted Texas toast slices.
Serve open-faced on simple white plates.
